THE WAYS OF OUR GOD: An Approach to Biblical Theology By Charles H. H. Scobie

(Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2003)

This is a very weighty tome, in more ways than one! Charles Scobie has devoted much of his life to thinking about biblical theology and this impressive book is the fruit of his labours. It is probably the most comprehensive overview of the subject as an academic discipline in its own right which makes it extremely useful for anyone doing serious research in the field. Part One takes us on a tour of what biblical theology is and how it may be done and Part Two offers Scobie's own proposal for a multi-thematic approach to exposing the Bible's plot-line - he centres on God's Order, God's Servant, God's People, God's Way. This is an extremely helpful book which will open up important avenues for further thought and study.
